In place of classic offsetting, Mobility is now offering its customers an extended CO2 offsetting solution for three cents per kilometre. Thanks to the myclimate «Cause We Care» programme, Mobility is immediately doubling all customer offset payments by paying six cents into the «Cause We Care» fund. This fund is being used to offset the CO2 emissions from car journeys, as before, through myclimate carbon offset projects, but part of the money is now also being invested in sustainability measures at Mobility, specifically with regard to developing a climate friendly fleet. The use of funds will be monitored by myclimate here. Thus, Mobility users can now not only offset their CO2 driving emissions, but also help speed up the conversion of Mobility’s fleet to being fully renewables-based.
In an interview, Roland Lötscher, Mobility’s CEO, provides more information about the climate strategy of this car-sharing company.
What is Mobility’s sustainability strategy and what individual steps is it taking? What are the specifics for implementing this strategy?
We want to become climate neutral by 2040, and after that we even want to reduce our historical emissions. In pursuit of this long-term goal, we will be converting our fleet to be entirely emissions-free with full electromobility by 2023 at the latest. To start with, the CO2 emissions of our vehicles will fall below the federal government’s estimate of 95g CO2 per km by 2023. Furthermore, in line with myclimate’s «Cause We Care» initiative, the climate protection contributions of Mobility customers will be doubled.
Where exactly is this extra money going?
On the one hand, this extra money will flow into the rapid expansion of our electric fleet, for example vehicle acquisition or charging infrastructure, while on the other Mobility finances various supporting projects, for example electrical training for customers or testing of charging concepts.
What does Mobility understand by an emissions-free fleet? How do you invest in such a fleet?
By an emissions-free fleet, we mean that all vehicles that can be booked via our platform do not create any travel or energy emissions. We want to achieve this at the latest by 2030, and we are focusing on electric cars for this. We are investing both in hardware, which means vehicles and charging stations, and also the know-how related to developing and operating electromobility.
What does Mobility think of the partnership with myclimate?
The partnership with myclimate is very valuable to Mobility. On the one hand, myclimate contributes its extensive knowledge in the area of sustainability, and on the other it functions as Mobility’s quality guarantee and supervisory authority. Thanks to myclimate, we can be sure that the complex calculations involved in attaining climate neutrality are watertight.
