Dachser supports the global community’s climate targets of net-zero emissions with its own comprehensive DACHSER Climate Protection strategy, which takes into account the special requirements of an integrated logistics network. The climate protection strategy essentially consists of four action areas: process efficiency, energy efficiency, research & innovation and Corporate Citizen+ (CC+). In this way, DACHSER pursues active and concrete climate protection with short-, medium- and long-term activities, investments and targets.
DACHSER uses the label “Corporate Citizen+” as an umbrella for sustainability and climate protection activities that extend beyond the confines of the company. The goal behind this is to work toward sustainable development, particularly in emerging and developing countries which are especially hard-hit by the negative impact of global warming. Specific climate protection measures are given the same consideration as other sustainability goals such as health and water, human dignity and gender equality, and the special protection of children.
Together with myclimate, Dachser has been supporting several certified projects since 2022 that promote climate protection and offer proven benefits for the local population and their living conditions. Key requirements for all projects include sustainability, transparency and a long-term approach, as well as a clear contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“This climate protection financing and long-term partnerships like the one we have with Dachser are the key to effective projects that promote both climate protection and social development. The extraordinarily extensive collaboration that is planned will make it possible to implement many more of the climate protection measures that are urgently needed around the world!” says Stefan Baumeister, Managing Director of myclimate Germany.
Dachser’s approach reflects myclimate’s scientifically proven recommendation to reduce operational emissions in the long term and to abate climate impacts beyond value chain mitigation in the form of climate protection projects.
This family company has set further ambitious targets for the long-term, holistic support of people and climate. Late 2023 saw the launch of a cooperation between DACHSER, the children’s rights organisation terre des hommes and the climate protection organisation myclimate. Dachser has been working with terre des hommes for two decades and would now like to expand their long-term and sustainable partnership through this cooperation, which will focus on community projects. These include access to clean local energy and energy for cooking, improved access to drinking water, improvements in agriculture and food security, and waste management and e-mobility. Technical measures to reduce CO2 emissions are also conceivable. Over the coming months and years, new and expanded projects will contribute to climate protection and support local populations, particularly children, in South America, Africa, Asia and Europe.
Stefan Hohm, Chief Development Officer (CDO) at DACHSER, emphasises the special nature of the partnership with myclimate and terre des hommes:
We are not only making a financial contribution; we are also playing a significant role in the design of the project. For us, carbon credits are not the main focus. Nor do we intend to use the positive climate effects of the projects for offsetting purposes or advertising messages such as “climate-neutral”, or to pass them on to third parties. We want to advance climate protection and sustainability with targeted and long-term initiatives. With myclimate and terre des hommes, we are working with highly respected and competent partners to jointly ensure the sustainable development of our planet’s vital resources.
Joshua Hofert, Head of Communications at terre des hommes, says: “The climate crisis is having a major impact on the lives of impoverished and disadvantaged children in many regions around the world. Every year, around 1.7 million children under the age of five die from diseases caused by poor environmental conditions. Every child has the right to live in a healthy environment. Our new partnership with Dachser and myclimate aims to help realise this right.”
In this partnership, participants and projects alike benefit from the in-depth knowledge transfer between the cooperation partners, including the myclimate Carbon Market team for programme and project work. Finally, DACHSER employees are also given the opportunity to participate in regional projects to develop knowledge about climate protection and to implement measures that contribute to a sustainable climate protection culture.
