There are all sorts of buzzwords doing the rounds: sucking CO2 out of the air, negative emissions, carbon removal, carbon capture… But there is one technology, millions of years old and proven to work, that can do all this particularly cheaply. What is it? Trees! But trees don’t just play these roles when they’re part of a forest. They can, and should, be planted on agricultural land as well. This is what is known as agroforestry.
What is agroforestry?
Agroforestry means the planting of trees on agricultural land, which can still continue to be used for agriculture. Our short film explains how agroforestry systems not only contribute to the storage of CO₂, but also create valuable habitats for animals and make water use more efficient. “Agroforestry combines traditional knowledge with today’s climate protection targets,” explains Jürg Strauss from SilvoCultura. Mareike Jäger, Co-Managing Director of SilvoCultura, started up this programme together with myclimate. She explains that the programme supports farms with attractive subsidies while at the same time offering an on-site consulting service on how to develop individual agroforestry systems.
Successful programme across the entire German-speaking region
myclimate’s support programme operates in Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein and receives a lot of interest from farmers. As of September 2024, 90 farms are taking part, which have registered a total of 17,000 trees and planted over 4000 already.
Why should your company support climate protection in your area?
The support programme offers future-oriented companies an outstanding opportunity to actively support nature-based climate protection measures in their region. This also means you can position yourselves as a company that is committed to doing its bit. As part of this commitment, myclimate offers the opportunity for your staff to visit farms that are involved in these projects and actively join in with their work (volunteering). For employees, this actually translates the company’s commitment to climate protection and the environment into real action very close to home and allows them to experience it first-hand.
Regional engagement involves a voluntary contribution towards climate protection measures in your region. The climate protection effect achieved (amount of CO2 captured) and other contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are quantified and verified by myclimate. We can then issue you with a confirmation receipt (which is not a CO2 certificate), which you can use in your communications.
