myclimate Terminates Collaboration with Climate Protection Project Biogas Sector Partnership in Nepal

myclimate is terminating its partnership with the climate protection project Biogas Sector Partnership in Nepal due to reporting irregularities. Despite intensive efforts, these shortcomings could not be remedied.

Collaboration with the climate protection project Biogas Sector Partnership in Nepal has been discontinued with immediate effect. This decision follows the discovery of multiple irregularities in the project’s reporting, which falls short of myclimate’s high standards of quality and transparency.

The partnership with the project, which was originally launched as a WWF pilot project and certified under the Gold Standard, lasted for 15 years. Despite intensive efforts, including a pre-announced on-site visit and the commissioning of an independent auditor to monitor the biogas plants, the shortcomings could not be satisfactorily remedied. The lack of cooperation on the part of the project partner and the resulting loss of trust make further collaboration impossible.

Impact on certificates and future of the project

The independent verification confirmed that the plants are in place and in operation as described in the monitoring reports. The cancellation only affects future emissions reductions and reductions from mid-2021 onward that are not yet certified.

This means that the emissions reductions and positive climate impact achieved by the project to date remain valid and meet myclimate standards. However, it will no longer be possible to support the project in Nepal in the future.  Certified emissions reductions from before 2021 will remain available to ensure a smooth transition for climate protection communications.
