The Biopap tray is made almost entirely from the renewable raw material cellulose. The natural material comes from FSC/PEFC-certified upstream suppliers and is 100% from European forests. In addition, the tray does not require any plastic or PET film and is aluminium-free. For this, it was awarded the German Packaging Award in Gold in the sustainability category in 2020.
The non-profit climate protection organisation myclimate took a close look at the environmental impact of the Biopap tray and comparable aluminium packaging. The result: the Biopap menu packaging made of cellulose performs almost 32% better than comparable packaging made of aluminium in terms of its CO₂ footprint along the entire life cycle.
Thanks to the cooperation with myclimate, all packaging used at Hofmann and the entire logistics are climate-neutral. This is because all unavoidable emissions are offset via the high-quality myclimate carbon offset project «Biogas plants benefit Nepalese families». The project is located in Nepal in the rural region of Terai Arc. There, women for the most part still cook for their families with wood. This has negative effects on the health of the women as well as on the climate. To counteract this problem, this project develops and distributes small biogas plants for private households. In this way, the population is supplied with clean energy and tree populations are preserved.
