In the course of the results of the Paris Climate Agreement, the Federal Government developed a catalogue of measures for effective climate protection in 2015 to 2016 together with the federal states, municipalities and associations. The long-term goal is to achieve climate neutrality by the middle of the 21st century. For each field of action, strategic measures were developed to contribute to the decarbonisation of Germany. The Climate Protection Plan 2050 describes the step-by-step transformation in technology, economy, society and culture. This transformation is to continuously adapt to technical, societal, political, social and economic developments as well as new scientific findings. A selection of the strategic measures:
- The Commission "Growth, Structural Change and Regional Development" is to develop a mix of instruments that enables climate protection in harmony with economic efficiency, structural change and social compatibility.
- Gradual development towards a nearly climate-neutral building stock with the help of extensive renovations and the associated conversion to heating systems that run on renewable energies.
- Expansion of the transport infrastructure to enable greenhouse gas-free mobility.
- Industry is to make industrial processes climate-neutral with the help of a research and development programme.
- In the area of land use and forestry, the focus is on preserving and improving the sink capacity of forests.
- A revision of the tax and levy system is to create economic advantages for the avoidance of greenhouse gases.
Update: After the Federal Constitutional Court recently ruled that the targets of the Climate Protection Plan are insufficient, the goal of climate neutrality in 2050 was brought forward to 2045 and the interim targets were tightened accordingly. Thus, instead of 55% of greenhouse gas emissions, 65% must now be reduced by 2030.
