Understand your corporate carbon footprint: categories and scopes

CO2 balances of companies and organizations, known as Corporate Carbon Footprints (CCF), include all relevant greenhouse gas emissions within a reference period, usually one year. The sources of greenhouse gas emissions can be categorized differently, for example, by functional categories such as energy consumption, fleet, transportation, business travel, materials, and other categories. Or according to the scopes model of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. The latter distinguishes between directly generated emissions in own facilities (Scope 1) and indirect emissions from purchased energy, such as electricity and district heating (Scope 2), as well as other upstream and downstream indirect emissions, such as from business travel and purchased materials (Scope 3). The methodological approach is based on internationally recognized standards (ISO 14064, GHG Protocol, CDP, GRI).

Act Strategically: Carbon Management and Sustainability Goals

The calculation of the Corporate Carbon Footprint is thus an essential building block in corporate climate protection. The CO2 balance at the corporate level serves as a basis for continuous carbon management and is a source of information and proof of greenhouse gas metrics for Nachhaltigkeitsberichte(e.g., according to GRI or CDP). Furthermore, a Corporate Carbon Footprint is needed to develop a CO2 target with a reduction path for the sustainability strategy, as required by the Science Based Targets Initiative.
